Winnipeg Airports Authority (WAA) and Telus Communications Inc. today announced a major wireless data and voice initiative at Winnipeg International Airport that includes a managed wireless local area network (WLAN) and public Wi-Fi services for travelers, the authority and airport tenants.
The new services expand wireless data capabilities throughout the airport, providing tenants, employees and travelers with high-speed access to the Internet and other data networks throughout the facility.
“This level of wireless connectivity will benefit our businesses and travelers alike, helping them optimize the advantages of PDAs, laptop computers and other portable wireless tools.” said Barry Rempel, president & CEO of Winnipeg Airports Authority Inc.
The authority and its internal clients can access the WLAN, which was built and managed by Telus to support internal operations such as passenger processing, wireless baggage scanning and aircraft maintenance. The public can take advantage of hotspots for high-speed access to the Internet and their own corporate networks.
The hotspots are public Internet access zones offering mobile access comparable to their high-speed Internet connections at home.
“Public Internet access at the Winnipeg International Airport is now available from the moment travelers enter the terminal to the time they board their flight,” said Robert Blumenthal, Telus Mobility’s vice president of products and services.
