LONDON, UK — Swedish telecom provider Telia International Carrier, a subsidiary of Telia AB, has announced the purchase of 1,500 kilometres of fibre and 10 co-location facilities in the UK from 360networks of Vancouver, BC.
The purchase will strengthen Telia’s position in the UK telecom market by expanding its wholly-owned Viking Network and forming the basis for further expansion plans in the region.
The deal will allow Telia International Carrier to offer high quality co-location at ten facilities along the network route. In addition, the dark fiber network will provide the basis for the roll-out of Telia’s SDH and IP network.
“It’s a great advantage for us to expand the Viking Network with a country-ring in one of Europe’s strongest economies,” said Erik Heilborn, CEO of Telia International Carrier. “The investment in the UK is a manifestation of our long-term strategy to keep our position as one of the leading carriers in Europe.”
The Viking Network is Telia International Carrier’s fully owned global network. The cross-border fiber optic network connects 50 key cities in EU and the US and covers some 40,000 route kilometres of lit fiber.
