Prysmian Telecom Cables & Systems says it has achieved a major milestone in its quest to reach one million installed kilometres of blown fiber with its latest delivery that takes total sales past the 750,000-kilometre mark.
The blown fiber concept — supplied by Prysmian under the Sirocco brand — involves the pre-installation of a tube network with the optical fibers subsequently being blown into the tubes as the network evolves and customer connections are completed.
Sirocco, which is predominantly installed in access networks, includes the fiber bundles, tube cables, connectors, internal and external plant together with specialist installation equipment and services.
With the current strong focus in telecoms on high capacity broadband applications and the subsequent drive to bring Fiber to the Home (FTTH) the adoption of these blown fiber systems in the last mile’ networks is set to rise dramatically, the company says.
