Platinum Communications Corp. has completed an agreement with Chinook’s Edge School Division No.73 to provide high-speed Internet services to five schools in the Sylvan Lake area of Alberta.

Platinum will be providing full high-speed fiber-based Internet access to the schools through the Alberta SuperNet by routing traffic through its main operation centre in Calgary.

This contract represents Platinum’s first step towards making high-speed Internet access available to schools in this central Alberta region, and ultimately, to SuperNet communities throughout Alberta, the company says.

The SuperNet is a government of Alberta initiative linking 4,700 libraries, schools, hospitals and provincial government offices in 422 communities province-wide by 2004.

In addition, commercial service providers in areas, which currently do not have high-speed connectivity options, will be able to access it at current market rates, bringing competitive broadband services to most Alberta businesses and residences, whether they are
in rural or urban areas.

The government announced yesterday it is on track to meet the final completion date of mid-2004. A process for resolving a commercial dispute between Bell West and Axia SuperNet Ltd. has been agreed to, which will enable the ongoing build of the SuperNet project to proceed, independent of the dispute process.

In the agreement reached between the parties, Axia SuperNet Ltd., in consultation with the Department of Innovation and Science, has agreed to relinquish its rights to continue with their subcontract to allow the project to proceed unimpeded by their dispute.

“We are very pleased to see Alberta SuperNet is moving forward once again to bring this important infrastructure to Albertans,” said Victor Doerksen, Minister of Innovation and Science. “Alberta SuperNet remains on track and on budget for bringing high-speed broadband network access to Albertans across the province, and we appreciate Bell West’s continued commitment to an on time, on budget completion.”

Axia SuperNet Ltd. is under contract with the government and has a critically important, ongoing role in Alberta SuperNet, the government said. The company is the operator of the entire network and will be the access manager of the network in the Extended Area, as well as providing network design services for SuperNet.

An updated rollout schedule is being prepared by Bell West for approval by the Government of Alberta. Upon approval, the schedule will be publicly released and will contain updated construction start and completion dates for Alberta SuperNet communities.
