Former Canadian Region Director to become president in two years time.
November 1, 2003
Members have elected John Bakowski, RCDD/ LAN/OSP Specialist, as president-elect and announced its new board of directors for the coming year.
Bakowski, a former BICSI Canadian region director and board secretary, will serve as president-elect for two years and become president in January 2006.
The Bell Canada employee has served on many other BICSI committees and was named Volunteer of the Year in 1992.
Bakowski has been a BICSI member since 1987 and dedicated a great deal of time to our association and to promoting excellence in the our industry.
Congratulations as well to the other newly elected officers who will all serve two-year terms beginning January 2004:
Treasurer: Ed Donelan, RCDD/LAN Specialist, Telecom Infrastructure Corp., Brewster, N.Y.
U.S. Northeast region director: Christine Klauck, RCDD/LAN Specialist, The Siemon Company, Watertown, Conn.
U.S. North-Central region director: Brian Hansen, RCDD/LAN Specialist, All Systems Installation, Golden Valley, Minn.
European region director: John Laban, RCDD/LAN Specialist, KnowHow Networks, Ltd., London, U.K.
BICSI staggers the terms of its Board of Directors to provide continuity so the new officers will join the members.
In 2003, BICSI held five Canadian region meetings attracting more than 400 members and other industry professionals.
Meetings were held in Calgary, Vancouver, Moncton and Ottawa. For the first time ever, the Canadian Region partnered with the U.S. Northeast Region and held a joint session in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
All had technical presentations, industry product displays, and awarded CECs. Evaluations have been very positive and we’re planning more of the same for 2004. Stay tuned.
As this column went to press, BICSI members, installers, and other telecommunications professionals in Canada were preparing for the last Canadian Region Meeting of the year at the Canada Aviation Museum in Ottawa.
Topics included Avvid VoIP Technology by Cisco Systems; Cabling Standards by Tim Smith, NORDX/CDT; Hardware/Cabinet Configurations by Colin Padley, CableTalk Systems, Inc; Physical and Environmental Security by Stephen Cherry, RCDD, Anixter; and Air Blown Fiber by David Barnes of General Cable Corp.
Education And Training
The 2004 edition of BICSI’s Educational Resource Catalogue (ERC) is now available. This contains descriptions of all BICSI courses, manuals, and registrations as well as class and exam schedules, registration and order forms. You can alsoregister for classes or order manuals online, www.bicsi.org. Or, call BICSI at 800-242-7405–they’ll send one right to you.
If you have a group or a number of fellow employees or colleagues (or even fellow BICSI members that you know!) who would like to take a course in your own location, contact BICSI and arrangements can be made to send out a trainer to your site.
Next year’s plans include a spring conference in Baltimore, a fall conference in Seattle and a Canadian conference in Ottawa. As well, I will have regional meetings early in 2004 in Toronto, with others to be scheduled.
BICSI will be celebrating its 30 years of service to the telecommunications industry in 2004. The 2004 Winter Conference, January 12-15, in Orlando will kick off a year-long celebration that will combine recognizing past leaders and accomplishments with visions for BICSI’s role in the future.
There are mini seminars (all of which award CECs) on Saturday, Jan. 10, Sunday, Jan. 11 and Monday, Jan. 12. The conference itself features 16 separate telecommunications sessions as well as business and committee meetings, the Annual Awards Banquet, and BICSI Cares. And don’t let me forget our Canadian Region lunch — it’s always great to see everybody.
For complete information, check out the conference final announcements, which were mailed in mid-November. You can also call BICSI 800-242-7405 or visit www.bicsi.org.
