With 2012 behind us, I hope that everyone had a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. It is a time to not only reflect on the past 12 months, but also a time to give thanks. I would like to take this time to thank so many folks for their contributions toward making the BICSI Canadian Region such a success last year.
First and foremost, I want to thank the hosts of all of the Region Meetings, as each came off without a hitch. Thank you to all of the presenters that took the time to come out and deliver quality presentations that were extremely educational and relevant.
Hats off to all of the manufacturers and distributors that participated in the Region Meetings this past year for without sponsors, it is difficult to bring these Region Meetings to you, the membership. I also want to thank the BICSI staff for all that they do. They work tirelessly in an effort to help all of us be more successful. Finally, thanks to all of you for continuing to see the growing value of BICSI.
In Canada, we are at an all-time high for membership and the BICSI Board of Directors is committed to ensuring that there are more tools and recourses available to you this year.
Many of us know that the ongoing and increasing need for qualified information technology systems (ITS) installers and technicians is a constant issue throughout Canada.
That said, I am pleased to advise that the Pearson Electro–technology Centre in Lachine, Que. will be hosting back-to-back training during the last two weeks of February.
This BICSI Authorized Training Facility (ATF) will be teaching the IN225: BICSI ITS Installer 2, Copper Training starting Feb. 18, followed by IN250: BICSI ITS Installer 2, Optical Fiber Training beginning Feb. 25.
The appropriate exams will be held following each course. Please see www.bicsi.org for further information.
Speaking of exams, I am excited to tell you that computer-based testing (CBT) for both the Electronic Safety and Security (ESS) Design and the Registered Telecommunications Project Manager (RTPM) examinations are now available. These exams join the RCDD, RITP, DCDC and OSP ones that are also available via Pearson VUE’s CBT.
If you have been thinking about working toward these credentials or are already preparing for an exam, you are now able to take it at one of Pearson VUE’s Authorized Testing Facilities, available worldwide. For locations and scheduling information, visit www.pearsonvue.com/bicsi.
And the education will continue well into 2013 across Canada. We have already scheduled several Region Meetings throughout the country, including:

In other BICSI-related news, the RTPM, BICSI’s newest credential, is gaining momentum. An RTPM oversees and coordinates the interaction between designers, engineers, installers and technicians when new ITS projects are being developed or undergoing construction.
In addition to the course and the exam, BICSI has recently released an accompanying study reference. The Telecommunications Project Management, BICSI Resource Material for RTPM Study reference material contains technical information that prospective candidates of BICSI’s RTPM designation will need to successfully complete the RTPM exam. This material, in addition to other publications, will help candidates as they work toward earning their RTPM credential. You can find more information on the reference at www.bicsi.org/publications.
Also recently released is BICSI’s new healthcare standard. Each day, it seems some new healthcare or IT development is released, increasing the pace of integration of IT systems. Be it electronic health records, newer and faster diagnostic equipment, or changing in patient care and experience, all are increasingly reliant on the stability of its IT infrastructure.
To aid today’s designer, BICSI 004-2012, Information Technology Systems Design and Implementation Best Practices for Healthcare Institutions and Facilities, provides guidance on the issues specific to the healthcare environment.
Written for the wide variety of facilities including hospitals, outpatient clinics and skilled nursing facilities, this standard covers not only common telecommunication and IT infrastructure concerns, but specific healthcare systems such as nurse call, interactive television/hospitality systems and connected medical imaging.
