More than just pretty faces

Far from being just names on a magazine's masthead, the professionals who make up Cabling Systems' Editorial Advisory Board are 'hands-on' contributors.

The concept of an Editorial Advisory Board is to assemble a group of people who are actively involved with the magazine’s subject matter and can share their knowledge with the magazine’s staff. I have often wondered how the journalists and editors who head the many publications on information technology are educated and informed on a vast array of subjects in their publications. I now understand that, in addition to their own hard work, there are people behind the scenes who augment their efforts to ensure the validity and accuracy of the writings.


Our Board was assembled by targeting various segments of the industry, such as consulting, manufacturing, contracting and end users. Our editor put together a very good group of senior and well-respected people from the various disciplines that make up our industry, and I was flattered to be among them. We have recently added Board representation from the distribution side of the industry, and regularly consider other areas of the cabling industry that may warrant inclusion.

In reviewing the magazine’s masthead, which lists the names and positions of the members of our Editorial Advisory Board, I find myself in impressive company. But what is most impressive to me, is the commitment of all involved to the success of the magazine; it is hard to imagine a busier group of people within our industry, yet all meetings are well-attended — and its not just for the coffee and pastries.


What is really important to the success of the Board is that members leave their ‘corporate identities’ outside of the meeting room. This is critical to the objectivity we try to bring to each subject we discuss. We are all committed to producing the best magazine we can and we try our best to inform and serve the readership. All of us know one another and have varied business dealings on a day to day business — as partners, customers, and even competitors. I think it speaks volumes that those who compete on a regular basis, in both the manufacturing and consulting disciplines, can come to the meetings and furnish each other with mutual respect.

Our board meets almost monthly at Southam’s offices outside of Toronto where in ‘Lou-Grant-esque” surroundings we discuss, plan, rant, rave and otherwise plot the direction of the magazine.

While an agenda for each meeting is dutifully prepared, we often find ourselves jumping headlong into a variety of industry issues — which is what often makes these meetings so dynamic. Conversations will usually get drawn off on a tangent before the editor waves the agenda in front of us to refocus our attention. In the end, we do complete discussions on planned magazine topics and article specifics before heading back to our jobs.


We are happy to receive feedback from the magazine’s readership, in order to know how our work is received. We encourage the participation of readers from all segments of the industry, and from all areas of the country. Your letters, e-mails and comments will only help to make us a better publication.
