Verizon Wireless and Alcatel-Lucent today announced a three-year agreement worth an estimated US$6 billion, which will see the latter provide network equipment, software and services to supporting a planned ongoing network expansion by the telecommunications firm.

The equipment will be used to increase the coverage and capacity of Verizons BroadbandAccess data network based on CDMA2000 1xEV-DO Revision A (Rev. A) technology and allow it to introduce new A-IMS services such as Voice over IP (VoIP), push-to-x and mobile video telephony.

In addition, the agreement calls for Alcatel-Lucent to enhance Verizon Wireless’ existing CDMA2000 1X network.
