Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (UL) has opened a new North America Optic Network Test Center at its division in Melville, N.Y.

According to the company, the use of fiber optics continues to grow because it provides much faster data transmission than copper wires.

UL’s North America Optic Network Test Centre will be able to provide any safety, performance verification and other special services required by the fiber optics industry, including the Verizon PFOC program, NEBS testing and TL9000 certification.

“UL wants to be at the forefront of adding services for manufacturers of optical network products,” said Kevin Ravo, information technology equipment business sector coordinator.

“We want to help them meet their product launch dates by getting their products to market faster. The time was right to centralize this testing at one facility.”

UL says the new test centre will reduce the time necessary for testing, improve the accuracy and reliability and help lower client costs.

The company is an independent, not-for-profit product safety certification organization that has been testing products for more than a century.
