Optical communications companies Essex Corp., Kodeos Communications Inc. and TeraSea Ltd. announced today the formation of a 10-Gbits/sec Optical, Multi-Source Working Group (ODB MSWG).
The group’s objective is to develop a common specification for extended reach 10-Gbits/sec transponder modules. The ODB MSWG will allow service providers and OEMs to contribute to a multi-source forum while providing a mechanism that facilitates interoperability between participants.
The optical transponder modules are initially targeted for extended reach applications up to 200 km and support data rates from 9.95 to 11.3 Gbits/sec. The inherent aspect of optical transmission offers network designers flexibility, longer reach, and better performance while saving manufacturing costs on next generation systems, the companies said.
“There is a growing market interest in extended reach, optical modules for regional and long-haul platforms,” said Massimo Di Blasio, senior director of marketing and business development at Kodeos.
