Toronto Hydro Telecom Inc. has expanded its network reach throughout Ontario through collaborative efforts with other Ontario-based utility-affiliated telecoms (u-telcos).
The network infrastructure is available province-wide for the company’s large enterprise customers such as financial services companies, insurance companies, hospitals, educational institutions and the provincial government.
The company provides network solutions for data transport and business Internet services to Toronto-based businesses.
Ian Miles, president of the Toronto Hydro subsidiary, predicts growing demand for these types of arrangements citing the continuing interest in business continuity planning and disaster recovery issues.
“U-telcos are an attractive alternative to incumbent networks when a customer has locations spread across the province," he said. "With interconnections to other u-telcos we are able to provide local expertise with regional reach.
Most u-telco networks were constructed post-1998 and use fiber optic cable that supports SONET and Ethernet backbones.
