Satellite operator Telesat Canada and Barrett Xplore Inc., a wireless broadband service provider, today announced a multi-year distribution contract that will deliver a new level of communications connectivity to Canadians in rural and remote communities.

The agreement names Barrett as a national service provider for a new satellite broadband service operating on Telesat’s Anik F2 satellite.

Telesat’s new satellite is the first in the world to commercialize the Ka-frequency band, a breakthrough satellite communications technology for delivering cost-effective, two-way broadband services.

Designed specifically for Canadians who do not have access to DSL or cable, Ka-band service provides high-speed Internet access without sacrificing a phone line.

Telesat is a subsidiary of BCE Inc.
