SMC Networks Inc. today unveiled what it described as the industry’s first multi-port combination 10GBASE-T and 10G fiber XFP network switch.

Available in January, the new SMC8724-10BT TigerSwitch 10G Standalone 24-port switch leverages 10 Gigabit technology including Solarflare’s 10Xpress PHY and switching silicon from Fulcrum Microsystems.

10GBASE-T enables customers to capitalize on the advantages of copper-based Ethernet while realizing the immense performance benefits of 10G networking, the company said in a release.

“We’re fully committed to 10 Gigabit networking in all of its possible implementations and applications,” said Iain Kenney, director of product marketing for SMC. “10G is the next step in performance networking for the LAN and data centre applications.”
