Rogers Communications Inc. today launched Canada’s first subscription-based encryption e-mail service, hosted by IBM Canada Ltd., which the two companies say provides for the confidentiality of e-mail communication for business users.

Available for $8.95 per month, per e-mail address, Rogers Secure Mail encrypts information between sender and recipient with a service developed by security software company Echoworx.

The security and privacy of e-mail is important for businesses,” said Randy Reynolds, president, Rogers Business Solutions. “

Registered users will be able to receive the encrypted e-mail by entering their password. Non-subscribers can view an encrypted e-mail after being directed to a Web site and answering a secret question known only to the sender and recipient.

“Stealing information on the Internet has become big business for today’s cyber criminals,” said Richard Branston, general manager, Security Solutions at IBM Canada. “More than 62% of Canadian businesses believe that cyber crime is more costly to them than physical crime.”
