A market research report from Dell’Oro Group has found that Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) port shipments in the third quarter of this year comprised over 20% of worldwide Ethernet switch port shipments.

The strong growth in PoE shipments was attributed to robust shipments of Gigabit Ethernet PoE ports that increased almost 80% when compared to the same quarter last year.

As we saw in the third quarter, enterprises are purchasing Gigabit PoE at a faster rate as they expand the features offered on their networks to be able to take advantage of a converged voice and data network and are future proofing for speed as the price premium for Gigabit PoE continues to decline, said Alan Weckel, senior analyst of Ethernet switch and IP telephony enterprise research at Dell’Oro.

Cisco Systems Inc. and Nortel Networks Inc., market leaders in sales of IP Phones that are the main device driving PoE deployments, both contributed to the record PoE shipments in the third quarter, he added.
