Primus Telecommunications Canada Inc. acquired Ottawa-based Internet services company Magma Communications Ltd. today for an undisclosed sum.

Founded in 1995, Magma provides Internet access, Web site hosting, managed systems administration and security services and Web design services to organizations in Canada and abroad.

The focal point is the company’s primary Internet Data Centre in Ottawa, which hosts Web sites and critical corporate data. It also operates a satellite facility in Toronto.

“We expect our customers will view this as an extremely positive move, as it expands the depth and breadth of products and services (we) can offer,” said A.J. Byers, Magma’s chief operating officer.

Primus said the acquisition will strengthen its data service offerings and position it to build on the existing base of government and corporate accounts.

New services such as dial acceleration and enhanced network security offerings will be introduced as a result of the deal, the company said in a statement.

The purchase will add an estimated 30,000 customers to Primus’ existing Canadian Internet customer base.
