The City of Winnipeg has chosen MTS Allstream to provide wireless services as part of a 28-month contract signed today.

Under the deal, MTS will provide the city and its employees with access to cell phones, wireless PC cards, BlackBerry handheld devices, cellular and wireless data airtime and related features.

City staff currently use approximately 2,000 cellular phones and wireless devices.

“From police officers and firefighters, to community service workers and planners, city staff are engaged every day in an incredible array of important, front-line services,” said Kelvin Shepherd, president of consumer markets at MTS.

“With this contract, they will have continued access to all of our latest wireless (services) including our 1xEV-DO network.”

The municipality employs 8,300 people and has an annual operating budget of approximately $700 million. The new contract takes effect on Aug. 1.
