Mitec Telecom Inc.’s satellite technology has been installed in a GSM base station in the Himalayan Mountain Range as part of China Mobile’s initiative to provide video coverage of the upcoming Beijing Olympic Torch Relay.

The base station, located at an elevation of 6,100 metres, will provide local cellular service and video transmission of the Torch Relay as it crosses the Himalayas, one of the highest points on Earth.

Montreal-based Mitec’s 10-watt satellite band block up converter with frequency shift key technology will be a key backhaul component of the GSM base station.

Its block upconverter technology can operate in temperatures below minus 30 degrees C.
