Eight leading wireless location companies from Canada, the US and Europe have joined forces to create the Wireless Location Industry Association (WLIA).

The companies expect the association to become what they call “the voice of the emerging wireless location industry”. The new association will focus on growing the wireless location industry, educating the public, lobbying regulators, endorsing industry standards through alliance building, tracking privacy issues, and developing self-regulating policies.

The founding members of the association include: Canadian companies Cell-Loc of Calgary, ViaVis Mobile Solutions Inc. of Vancouver and Zero-Knowledge Systems Inc. of Montreal; US-based companies SignalSoft, GoAmerica Communications and Indexonly Technologies; and UK-based Cambridge Positioning Systems and iProx.

Claudio Rodrigues of Cell-Loc has been named chairman of the interim Board of Directors for the WLIA.
