Toronto-based Call-Net Enterprises Inc. and NorthPoint Communications Group of San Francisco, CA, have created a joint venture to deliver wholesale digital subscriber line (DSL)-based broadband services to businesses throughout Canada.

The partnership will combine NorthPoint’s core broadband networking expertise with Call-Net’s established nation-wide network and base of business customers.

“DSL is an important component of Call-Net’s new data and IP based focus,” said Kevin Bennis, Call-Net’s president and CEO. “By partnering with the acknowledged U.S. leader of high speed Internet access, this technology will be available to us faster than if we operated alone and with a smaller investment of capital.”

The joint venture will replicate NorthPoint’s wholesale model for rapid DSL network deployment in the US, where the company has established an expansive broadband network. It will begin service in the third quarter of this year under the Northpoint brand.
