Norscan has recently unveiled an optical monitoring system that can report the immediate location of fiber cuts.

Called the 4200 Optical Alarm Unit (OAU), the user-defined system will monitor dark or active fibers and automatically report a fiber cut location on either one fiber in two directions or two fibers in one direction. The system will also monitor multiple fibers per cable with the integration of an optical switch.

During a fiber break, the system targets the problem and reports the distance of the break on its front panel and through most alarm forwarding systems. Up to 70 miles of single mode fiber can be monitored for break locations.
