Sumitomo Electric Lightwave has launched a groove fusion splicer with a dual heating system, which the company says is an industry first. The built-in dual heating system of the Type-46 TomCat plus fusion splicer improves splicing efficiency and productivity by 70%.

The splicer’s advanced electronic design, which accommodates a built-in dual heating system and simultaneous operation, streamlines the splicing process and reduces the bottle neck of “heater wait time” by 88%. With a typical heater cycle time of only 40 seconds and splice cycle of only 14 seconds, TomCat plus speeds deployment and reduces labour time and costs.

By incorporating passive diameter alignment splicing technology, the splicer yields the repeatable and consistent low loss results required for the increased reliability and performance for today’s data centre, enterprise network, outside plant, structured cabling, and FTTx applications, the company says.
