In its first phase of a major communications initiative, Sudbury, Ontario-based Regional Cablesystems Inc. has built a gigabit wide area network (WAN) for two northern Ontario school boards.

The network interconnects the administration offices of the two boards and seven area high schools. Regional says the network will enable the institutions to support high-speed Internet, on-demand learning systems and broadcast quality video conferencing, while reducing network complexity and simplifying network administration.

The project utilizes the company’s 1,000 kilometre fiber-optic infrastructure and features a self-healing ring architecture to ensure increased availability and a reliable service for the school boards to build upon. W
