ONI Systems Corp. the San Jose, California-based provider of optical telecommunications systems for metropolitan and regional markets, has opened a Lightwave Design Centre in Montreal.

The new facility, which houses an optical research laboratory, is the second such centre built by the company. ONI opened its first Lightwave Design Centre in Research Triangle Park, NC.

Rusty Cumpston, executive VP of Engineering and Operations at ONI, said Montreal’s technical talent pool, combined with “the pro-business support and R&D tax incentives of the federal and provincial governments,” led the company to choose the Quebec location.

At the new facility, the company will conduct R&D and develop manufacturing test systems for its optical networking products. ONI plans to staff its new office with approximately 50 people over the next year, and notes there is an opportunity to more than double that number by 2003.

Those interested in employment opportunities in the ONI Montreal facility are asked to e-mail the company at: montrealjobs@oni.com.
