Nortel Networks, Brampton, ON, has won contracts totalling approximately US$132 million to build or significantly expand GSM networks in six of China’s provinces over the next year.

These contracts include a new GSM 900 network in Xinjiang, China’s largest province, for Xinjiang Mobile Communications; a new GSM 1800 network for Hebei Mobile Communications in the provincial capital of Shijiazhuang; and major expansions to existing GSM 900 networks for Zhejiang Unicom, Ningxia Unicom, Ningbo Unicom, and Shaanxi Mobile Communications.

When completed, these networks will collectively offer capacity for more than three million GSM subscribers. They will also provide a foundation for evolution to wireless Internet services.

These new awards continue the rapid growth of Nortel’s wireless presence in Greater China. The company now has wireless networks in 17 of China’s 31 provinces.
