In its continuing quest to deliver the all-optical Internet, Nortel Networks, Brampton, ON, has agreed to acquire Xros of Sunnyvale, CA, a leader in second-generation, fully photonic switching for US$3.25 billion.

Xros’ silicon-based micro-mirror technology will allow data to be switched through large-scale optical networks entirely in the form of light. The companies say that this technology provides the capability to scale network hubs with much greater capacity than is now possible.

According to Nortel, combining this technology with its ultra-long-reach solution, the Qtera ULTRA, will give it the capability to deliver the world’s first all-optical network.
