Nortel Networks of Brampton, ON, has announced it will provide US $16.5 million in 2000 to technology, science and math education programs for students.

The funding will be administered by a program called the Nortel Networks Foundation. The Foundation expects to award as many as 1,200 scholarships to students in North America by the end of the year.

“As the basis for future leaders who will develop economies and improve life in the community, education is crucially important,” says Rosemary McCarney, VP of Nortel Networks. “By focusing on students, we believe we can make the most valuable contribution in the communities where we live and work.”

The Foundation will also support employee volunteer initiatives such as the “In-School Program,” where Nortel employees in Canada and the U.S. train teachers on how to guide their students in using the Internet.
