Lucent Technologies’ Microelectronics Group, Murray Hill, NJ, has announced it will acquire Ortel Corporation, an Alhambra, California-based developer of optoelectronic components for cable TV (CATV) networks for approximately US$2.95 billion.

Ortel’s technologies enable CATV systems suppliers to build high-capacity networks to meet demand for services to the home, such as Internet telephony and access. The companies aim to work together to help speed the transition of CATV networks from a one-way broadcast capability to a two-way, fully interactive communications medium.

Lucent expects the acquisition to be completed during the quarter ending June 30, 2000, at which time Ortel will become part of Lucent’s optoelectronics component division. Ortel’s 550 employees will remain at their current locations.
