Despite declining growth rates in the fiber optics industry, first mile fiber connections to multi-tenant office buildings remain a strong growth area, a report by Communications Industry Researchers, Inc. (CIR) of Charlottesville, VA has found.

CIR says that while the ILECs will continue to dominate the business landscape, the new fiber-based CLECs and BLECs will provide the impetus for growth in next generation optical access technology and services.

The report, Optical Access: Next Generation Technology and Services in the First Mile, says “optical buildings” will spur the optical access systems market to surpass US$2 billion by 2005. The report also predicted that the number of fiber-connected buildings in the U.S. will grow from 21,000 in 2001 to more than 43,000 in 2005.
