BICSI adopts new strategic plan

Organization's board draws up four key goals in an attempt to 'blaze a new trail' moving forward.

As the nature and direction of the ICS market changes, so does the need for us as members of this sector to adapt. Consequently, BICSI will need to understand and interpret those changes to provide the tools to members to help understand and take advantage of those changes and the opportunities they provide.

This April, BICSI’s board of directors adopted a strategic plan to serve as a roadmap to the future — a plan that honours its history, builds on past success and challenges us to not just react to the future, but proactively influence it.

The foundation of the plan is to be “a globally respected provider and driver of knowledge, credentials and standards, and an indispensable source of community to our industry.”

To achieve this, BICSI will focus on four key goals:

* Make its credentials the most coveted and premiere designations in the ITS industry.

* Ensure it is the trusted source of global standards and best practices.

* Maintain its current standing as a valued resource of information, insight, and learning opportunities that are essential to achieving BICSI and other industry designations.

* Broker the development of unique, relevant and dynamic professional communities around the world.

With these goals in place, we now have clarity about our future and can relate it to our core purpose, which is to advance the knowledge and success of our members, their customers, and the ITS industry.

Turning Words into Action: The plan tells us what we are and what we want to become as a membership association. It is also a physical embodiment of the words we as a community have been speaking for years. By writing it down, it becomes measurable, and we can be held accountable.

It will also provide guidance on how to best utilize available resources to realize this future. The plan is a collective vision of the future, and is not static or fixed.

It is a dynamic document that will be reviewed and revised to match changes in our industry. Achieving the goals in the plan will require the active support and collective effort of our volunteer leadership, committees, members and industry partners.

Together, we will develop the strategies and tactics to implement the vision and deliver on the promise. The power of the document is not in the stated goals and objectives, but in the conversations that will occur now that the written roadmap exists.

We can either wait for the future to come to us, or we can blaze the trail and remain true to the vision and passion of our founders. The goal is to advance the knowledge and success of our members, their customers, and the ITS industry.

The organization’s core values are as follows:

* Conduct all dealings in an ethical manner; honouring our promises; and sustaining a reputation as an honest and trusted resource.

* Continually improve; and constantly be aware of market innovation; flexible and be adaptable to change.

* Be inclusive and recognize the value of diverse perspectives; appreciating our members and volunteers; and being responsible stewards of their investment.

The vision is to be the worldwide pre-eminent source of information, education and knowledge assessment for the constantly evolving information transport systems (ITS) industry, while the mission is as follows:

* Lead the information transport systems industry with excellence in publications, education, and knowledge assessment.

* Advance our members’ ability to deliver the highest quality products and services.

* Provide our members with opportunities for continual improvement and enhanced professional stature.

Part of the new strategic direction for BICSI is to develop “unique, relevant and dynamic professional communities around the world.” To that end, BICSI recently signed a second friendship agreement within the last 18 months — this time with Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading trade association for the information and communications technology (ICT) industry.

The agreement includes maintaining a regular exchange of information and considering possible cooperative activities.

BICSI’s first partnership was signed with InfoComm International, the trade association of the professional audiovisual and information communications industries.

As part of the agreement, BICSI and InfoComm collaborated to publish the new AV Design Reference Manual (AVDRM), combining the expertise of BICSI and InfoComm.

The manual provides BICSI’s ITS designers and installers with clear insight on how AV systems are assembled.
