One of the bold predictions is about the size of the Internet. In its report, “Approaching the Zettabyte Era,” Cisco Systems Inc. forecasts the following:

• Annual global IP traffic will exceed 0.5 zettabytes in four years. At about 44 exabytes a month, annual traffic in late 2012 is forecasted at 522 exabytes per year. A zettabyte, or 1,000 exabytes, will become the milestone for 2012 and beyond. (A zettabyte is approximately 1021 bytes.)

• Global IP traffic will nearly double every two years to 2012. It will be six times larger than it was in 2007, and four times larger than in 2008. The chief driver is Internet video, which will account for nearly 50 per cent of all consumer traffic in 2012.

• The Internet in 2012 will be 75 times larger than it was in 2002. Internet traffic will generate 27 exabytes per month in 2012, the equivalent of nearly 7-billion DVDs each month.

• In 2010, Internet video will surpass P2P in volume, the first time since 2000 that any application has displaced P2P as the top driver of Internet traffic.
