Alcatel-Lucent has begun testing symmetrical 10 Gbps broadband connections with Portugal Telecom and Verizon, delivered over gigabit passive optical networks.

Portugal Telecom is reported to have already tested broadband at these speeds, while Verizon reports that it has successfully completed field trials using a fiber-optic transmission technology known as XG-PON2, which is capable of delivering 10 Gbps both upstream and downstream.

The fact that these speeds are available upstream as well as downstream is expected to become increasingly important with the emergence of services such as cloud computing, remote storage, “Software as a Service” applications, and even backhaul of mobile traffic including LTE, the company says.
